Well, partial victory. At 7913 words, my German Extended Essay has been emailed to my tutor, for verily, I'm sick of the sight of the damn thing! It's about how Rilke (a poet) has been translated into English since the 1950s. It's all been very interesting, especially looking at the actual process of translating itself. But, even the most interesting of essays eventually start driving you insane, so I'm pleased to have rid of that one for the time being.
Now I'm concentrating on the French essay, and am currently 2101 words into that one. It's about a contemporary novelist and playwright, Eric-Emmanuel Schmitt, who's written some fantastic stuff, and the essay focuses on how the characters are always trying to "reconstruct" life and truth to suit themselves, and how they think it should be, rather than following what one could term the "natural order of things". It's taken me a while to find the right approach, but after lots of thinking and reading various bits of literary theory etc, I think I've got it: looking at the different methods the various texts use, be it physical, literary, quasi-spiritual, etc. Again, it promises to be interesting, and it's good that I'm feeling motivated, because it needs to be finished by the end of September. My aim is to write about 400 words a day, which is very very doable, and means it'll be done on time.
Today I also have to:
do the ironing
tidy the house
cook tea
Before everyone gets home, at 6.30ish. This can be done. Honest. Somehow.
Also, the iTunes free download thing throws up some really good tunes :)
